The world's largest supermarket chain, Walmart, announced on its official website that it will trial three generative AI tools on its e-commerce platform to help users improve their shopping experience and efficiency.

It is reported that Walmart is using a ChatGPT-like product that can automatically generate shopping suggestions, search recommendations, and review summaries based on text prompts. For example, if a user asks, 'What are some good suggestions for buying formula for a 2-year-old baby?'

Walmart's generative AI shopping assistant will first list various considerations for purchasing infant formula and then present products on the platform that meet the criteria. Users can also ask follow-up questions about specific products, significantly saving shopping time.

Notably, e-commerce giant Amazon is also testing similar features. This indicates that generative AI products like ChatGPT have vast potential for application in the e-commerce sector and have already gained recognition from industry leaders.

According to survey data, American households spend about 6 hours per week on shopping planning and product selection, a process that is often tedious, repetitive, and dull. Walmart aims to simplify this process with generative AI.

Walmart has developed three generative AI shopping assistants by leveraging its vast data and fine-tuning third-party large language models.

Shopping Assistant: Provides detailed, personalized shopping recommendations based on user queries. For example, when asked "What phone should I buy for a 12-year-old?", it suggests factors like parental controls, durability, price, ease of use, and educational apps.

It then lists qualifying products from Walmart's e-commerce platform, allowing users to inquire about specific items.

Search Assistant: Streamlines complex shopping searches. Instead of individually searching for Halloween party supplies (streamers, balloons, tableware, etc.), users can simply ask "What do I need for a Halloween party?" to get comprehensive results, with support for follow-up questions.

Review Assistant: When selecting a product (e.g., a cup) on Walmart's platform, it quickly filters out the most useful customer reviews and provides summarized highlights to aid purchase decisions.

Additionally, a month ago, Walmart announced the deployment of generative AI assistants for 50,000 employees to help them draft emails, summarize content, generate creative ideas, and more, thereby improving efficiency and saving time.

Currently, Walmart is fully embracing generative AI, from internal operations to external e-commerce, to solidify its position as an innovative leader in the e-commerce sector.

    About Walmart

Founded in 1962 and headquartered in Bentonville, Arkansas, USA, Walmart is one of the world's largest supermarket chains and corporations. It operates over 11,000 stores across 27 countries and regions under various brands.

Walmart is also highly active in technological innovation, particularly in e-commerce, big data, and artificial intelligence. Its online shopping platform (Walmart.com) has become one of the largest e-commerce websites in the United States.
