On September 11, the opening ceremony of the 2023 Guangdong Cybersecurity Awareness Week was held in Guangzhou, featuring events such as a cybersecurity summit forum and a cybersecurity expo.

During the awareness week, Guangdong will also host a cybersecurity competition, a cybersecurity knowledge quiz with prizes, a research activity on high-quality cybersecurity development in Guangdong, a cybersecurity awareness campaign, and grassroots cybersecurity education initiatives. These activities aim to promote cybersecurity awareness among the public, enhance their cybersecurity skills, strengthen cybersecurity defenses, and safeguard a clean cyberspace.

At the summit forum, cybersecurity experts and industry representatives, including Chinese Academy of Engineering academicians Shen Changxiang and Wu Jiangxing, shared insights on topics such as the integration of cybersecurity education, technology, and industry, protection of critical information infrastructure, data security, and personal information protection. They provided suggestions to advance the high-quality development of the internet and information industry.

"A secure and trustworthy network protection system is the foundation for building a strong cyber nation," said Shen Changxiang. In the era of the Internet of Things, cyberattacks will extend from digital space to physical space, necessitating the establishment of a secure and trustworthy industrial system to build an active immunity framework for cyberspace security.

Shen explained that most current cybersecurity systems rely on firewalls, intrusion detection, and virus scanning. However, traditional "blocking and killing" methods struggle to counter human-driven attacks and are easily exploited by attackers.

He introduced active immunity trusted computing as a new computing model that integrates security protection with operations. Using cryptographic techniques for identity verification, state measurement, and secure storage, it distinguishes between "self" and "non-self" components, effectively neutralizing harmful elements.

"From passive defense to active immunity, trusted computing shifts the paradigm from focusing solely on computational efficiency to incorporating security protection, effectively cultivating immunity for network information systems," Shen added.

Wu Jiangxing highlighted the unpredictable, highly uncertain, and rapidly evolving nature of cyber threats. Ensuring that digital products are free of vulnerabilities and defenses remain unbreached is an extremely challenging goal. He emphasized the need for "bodyguard-style" protection services for users and integrating cybersecurity into the design and manufacturing of electronic and network products, addressing both production and user sides simultaneously.

As a major internet and digital economy hub, Guangdong must strengthen its cybersecurity defenses. Shen suggested promoting secure and trustworthy network products and services, building a robust industrial system, and enhancing cybersecurity capabilities to support the thriving cybersecurity industry.

At the cybersecurity expo, the AI face-swapping exhibit in the Guangdong pavilion drew significant public interest. Many visitors found the interactive experience both entertaining and eye-opening, underscoring the importance of cybersecurity and personal data protection.

The expo, held from September 11 to 13 at the Canton Fair Complex, showcased Guangdong's achievements in cybersecurity innovation, industry development, talent cultivation, and public education. Covering nearly 10,000 square meters, the event featured 37 exhibitors. Visitors could enter for free by scanning their ID cards, participate in fun activities, experience technological advancements, and learn about cybersecurity.

In addition to AI face-swapping, citizens can participate in on-site cybersecurity experience activities such as smart lock cracking, WiFi password theft simulations, and surveillance video hacking demonstrations. They can also enjoy the elegant music performed by China's first intelligent robot capable of playing the guzheng authentically. Attendees may join quizzes on personal information protection and cybersecurity knowledge, winning small gifts while learning about data security and anti-online fraud measures to enhance their cybersecurity awareness.

During this year's Guangdong Cybersecurity Awareness Week, education, public security, and financial departments will host themed days including Campus Day, Telecom Day, Legal Day, Finance Day, Youth Day, and Personal Information Protection Day. Through lectures, competitions, forums, and open classes, these events aim to reinforce the principle that 'cybersecurity is for the people and relies on the people.'
