Joe Tsai: China's AI Technology May Lag Behind U.S.'s OpenAI by Two Years
-
According to media reports, Alibaba co-founder and chairman Joe Tsai candidly pointed out that in the field of AI technology, there is a certain gap between China and the U.S. He further noted that compared to top U.S. large language models (LLMs) like OpenAI's ChatGPT, China may be two years behind. However, this does not mean China will slow its pace in catching up in this field.
Tsai emphasized that China is actively striving to catch up with the new wave of AI led by U.S. companies. He firmly believes that, in the long run, despite challenges such as the ban on Nvidia chips, China will be capable of independently manufacturing high-end GPU (graphics processing unit) chips, thereby breaking technological barriers and achieving self-sufficiency. When discussing Alibaba's role in the AI large model revolution, Joe Tsai stated that as one of China's leading cloud computing companies, Alibaba not only possesses outstanding large model technology but has also attracted numerous developers to build on its platform. These developers leverage Alibaba Cloud computing services, collectively driving the continuous growth of Alibaba Cloud's business and injecting strong momentum into the company's future development.
Speaking about China's position in global manufacturing, Tsai confidently asserted that China will not lose its status as the world's factory. In terms of economic scale, labor force size, and quality, countries like Mexico and Vietnam still lag significantly behind China. He firmly believes that China's leadership position in global manufacturing remains solid.
In closing, Tsai offered valuable advice to young people. He emphasized that young professionals should strive to develop expertise in specialized fields such as programming, data science, or psychology, aiming to become top 10% performers in their respective domains. He believes becoming an expert is the most effective path to gaining respect and social recognition.
