ChatGPT Adds Read Aloud Feature Supporting 37 Languages and 5 Voices
-
Today, OpenAI launched a new feature called 'Read Aloud' for its popular chatbot ChatGPT. This feature allows ChatGPT to read its responses aloud in five different voices, aiming to provide users with a more convenient interactive experience. Currently, the 'Read Aloud' feature is available on ChatGPT's web version, iOS, and Android apps.
The 'Read Aloud' feature supports 37 languages and can automatically detect the text language for reading. Notably, this feature works with both GPT-4 and GPT-3.5 versions of ChatGPT. This update showcases OpenAI's efforts in 'multimodal capabilities,' enabling AI models to read and respond through multiple media. Interestingly, OpenAI's competitor Anthropic recently added a similar feature to its AI model.
IT Home noted that as early as September 2023, ChatGPT introduced the 'voice chat' feature, allowing users to interact with the chatbot via voice without text input. The new 'Read Aloud' feature lets users choose to have ChatGPT read its text responses aloud and even set it as the default reply method.
On mobile apps, users can long-press the text to open the 'Read Aloud' player for playback, pause, or rewind. On the web version, a speaker icon appears below the text, and clicking it activates the read-aloud function.
