OpenAI's new Read Aloud feature for ChatGPT is now available on the web version as well as iOS and Android ChatGPT apps.

Read Aloud supports 37 languages and automatically detects the language of the text being read. The feature works with both GPT-4 and GPT-3.5. This is an interesting example of what OpenAI can achieve with multimodal capabilities (the ability to read and respond through multiple media). OpenAI revealed this shortly after competitor Anthropic added similar features to its AI model.

ChatGPT introduced voice chat functionality in September 2023, allowing users to directly ask the chatbot prompts without typing. Now, the new feature will enable people to have ChatGPT read generated written answers aloud, and users can set the chatbot to always respond verbally when answering prompts. On mobile applications, users can tap and hold text to open the audio playback interface, where they can play, pause, or rewind the spoken content. The web version displays a speaker icon below the text.
