Google Releases World's Most Powerful Open-Source Large Model Gemma: Average Performance Far Exceeds Llama, Runs on Laptops
-
In the early hours of today, Google announced the launch of Gemma, the world's most powerful and lightweight open-source model series.
The model comes in two sizes: 2B (2 billion parameters) and 7B (7 billion), with the 2B version even capable of running directly on laptops. Google states that Gemma is built on the same research and technology as the Gemini model, developed by Google DeepMind and other Google teams, specifically designed for responsible AI development.
Google claims that in 18 key benchmark tests covering language understanding, reasoning, and mathematics, the Gemma model outperformed larger open-source models like Meta's Llama-2 in 11 of them.
On average, Gemma-7B achieved a benchmark score of 56.4, significantly higher than Llama-13B (52.2) and Mistral-7B (54.0), making it currently the world's most powerful open-source model. Google and Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai (Sundar Pichai) stated that Gemma demonstrates strong performance, and starting today, this model will be available for service worldwide.
Additionally, it has achieved cross-device compatibility, capable of running on various mainstream device types including laptops, desktops, IoT devices, mobile devices, and the cloud, supporting a wide range of AI functionalities.
