"Father of ChatGPT" Gets Married: Sam Altman Holds Secret Wedding with Same-Sex Partner
-
According to foreign media reports on January 11, OpenAI CEO and former Y Combinator president Sam Altman has gotten married.
Foreign media reported that on January 10, 2024, Altman and his boyfriend Oliver Mulherin held a private wedding ceremony in Hawaii, exchanging vows.
The ceremony took place near Altman's local residence. The wedding was quite low-key, attended only by close family and friends. Altman's brother, Jack Altman, officiated the wedding. Jack is also a well-known figure in the startup community, being the founder and former CEO of Lattice, a company specializing in employee performance management software.
Mulherin is known for his low-key demeanor in daily life. Insiders describe his relationship with Altman as "deeply affectionate and supportive," with the two supporting each other through various life experiences. On their big day, Altman and Mulherin wore casual matching outfits: white shirts, light beige pants, and white sneakers.
The couple announced their marriage on Instagram, with Mulherin captioning the post: "Married my best friend and the love of my life."
Mulherin graduated from the University of Melbourne with a degree in software engineering, where he worked on some AI projects during his studies, particularly in language detection and gaming. However, his main expertise lies in the Internet of Things (IoT) field. In 2018, he joined the open-source coding organization IOTA Foundation.
Before dating Mulherin, Altman was in a nine-year relationship with Nick Sivo, with whom he co-founded Loopt, a geolocation software for friends. The two broke up in 2012 after the company was acquired.
Last year, Altman experienced what may have been one of the most challenging moments of his career. As OpenAI's co-founder and CEO, he was fired by the board, causing an uproar, but he ultimately regained his position. In a September interview with New York Magazine, Altman mentioned his plan to start a family soon. Now he has gotten married and embarked on a new chapter in his life.
