The AI Magic Mirror is Here! BMind Smart Mirror Uses Generative AI to Recognize Human Emotions
-
A smart mirror unveiled at CES 2024 has turned the fairy tale phrase 'Mirror, mirror on the wall, who is the fairest of them all' into reality. Baracoda's BMind smart mirror, equipped with generative artificial intelligence (AI), claims to assess users' emotions and subsequently provide affirmations, images, and more to improve their mood.
This smart mirror has won the 2024 CES Innovation Award in the smart home category. By combining AI and natural language processing (NLP), it analyzes the emotions of the person looking at the mirror, adapting to their current mood through facial expressions, gestures, and tone of voice. It offers light therapy, guided meditation, and positive affirmations to improve mood and better manage stress.
The technology is powered by the CareOS platform, which allows third-party providers to connect their applications for display within the mirror interface. Its specifications include an omnidirectional microphone for voice detection, a 4K ultra-HD camera, and Face ID as a security measure to unlock the mirror.
For example, when asked how their day was, a tester deliberately responded that everything was terrible for testing purposes. The smart mirror then offered encouraging words, switched the lighting to a calming blue hue, displayed images of nature, and prompted her to begin a guided meditation session.
Beyond mental health support, BMind also provides customized features such as guided tooth brushing, skin analysis with guidance, and bathroom water temperature monitoring.
It's worth noting that the combination of AI and mental health can be tricky, partly due to potential biases in algorithms and privacy concerns. Baracoda emphasizes that the CareOS platform stores health and personal data locally and never shares it with any third party without explicit user request and consent. The BMind smart mirror is set to launch by the end of 2024, priced between $500 and $1000.
