Microsoft Executive Reveals Plans to Launch More Large Language Models Surpassing OpenAI
-
Microsoft's senior executive Eric Boyd revealed in an interview that the company plans to launch more large language models (LLMs) surpassing OpenAI in the future to meet enterprise clients' demand for diverse choices. Boyd emphasized that Microsoft's generative AI applications and the LLMs they utilize are secure and reliable, but he noted that companies focusing on areas like text generation are more likely to achieve rapid development.
In a VentureBeat interview primarily focused on enterprise readiness for AI adoption, Boyd's disclosure appears to be a response to Amazon AWS CEO Adam Selipsky's criticism last week, where Selipsky stated that companies "don't want cloud service providers to be primarily constrained by one model provider."
When asked whether Microsoft would offer more models beyond OpenAI, potentially through partnerships with companies like Anthropic, Boyd responded: "I mean, there's always something new emerging. Stay tuned in this space. There's no doubt we're working on something."
Microsoft has already deployed OpenAI's models in its consumer and enterprise products, such as Bing, GitHub Copilot, and Office CoPilots. Although Microsoft also provides options to use other models through its Azure Machine Learning platform, including open-source models from Hugging Face, closed-source models like OpenAI's often represent the fastest route to market for many enterprise companies.
Boyd emphasized in a broad interview that Microsoft plans to remain competitive in its choices. He stated that the company's generative AI applications and the LLMs that power them are safe and usable, but companies focused on models performing well in areas like text generation can advance more quickly.
