A new technology is bringing low-cost, high-resolution artificial intelligence (AI) image generation to a broader user base without the paywall behind powerful computers. In the past, to create high-quality AI images, users had to subscribe to services like Midjourney or DALLE-3 or purchase their own supercomputers.

This new tool, called DemoFusion, allows users to generate basic images using free, open-source AI models similar to Stable Diffusion and then enhance them at higher resolutions, adding more details and features. The required computing power can be achieved on any mid-range gaming PC or Mac M1.

DemoFusion was developed by a team led by Professor Yi-Zhe Song from the University of Surrey. He stated: "Our unique technology enables users to enhance their AI-generated images for the first time without requiring massive computing power or any retraining of the model. Digital art and images are powerful mediums, and everyone should have the opportunity to use them, not just a few wealthy companies. That's why we've made DemoFusion publicly available to the masses."

This new technology has been published on the arXiv preprint server. To achieve high-resolution results using ordinary open-source AI tools, the team first generated low-resolution images and then enhanced them. This is not a simple upscaling method, but rather works on the images block by block, improving detail and resolution by at least 16 times.
