-
Opinions on artificial intelligence may still be mixed, but discussions about this technology are certainly abundant, especially between employers and job seekers. According to LinkedIn's latest report, conversations about AI have increased by 70% over the past year. This is the second report released by the job platform on "Artificial Intelligence in the Workplace".
Over the past year, discussions about artificial intelligence (AI) on the platform have increased by 70%. The report shows that global AI discussions are primarily driven by men (58%), but women's interest in the topic is also significant, accounting for 31% of the discussions. Among different generations, millennials are the most active in AI discussions (45%), followed by Gen Z (26%) and Gen X (21%), while baby boomers' participation is only 4%. Surprisingly, the most enthusiastic industry discussing AI is not the tech industry but professional services (29%), followed by the tech industry (17%) and education (9%).
Beyond discussing new technologies, LinkedIn members have shown strong interest in finding employment opportunities in work environments embracing AI. From December 2022 to September 2023, views for AI and related positions grew by 12% across seven major economies (Australia, Brazil, France, Germany, India, the UK, and the US), while applications for jobs utilizing AI increased by 11%. Although AI jobs currently represent only a small fraction of employment opportunities, applications for positions mentioning AI have grown by 17% over the past two years.
AI jobs are growing across industries. In the US, the top five industries with the highest demand for AI-related roles include professional services; administrative and support services; retail; manufacturing; and technology, information, and media. Interestingly, as AI can be applied and learned across various sectors, those embracing AI may discover new and different opportunities emerging. These opportunities could help address gender and racial disparities existing in certain industries. According to surveys, individuals embracing AI literacy may find their knowledge and skills becoming more transferable. This is significant because over half of LinkedIn members might see their jobs change due to the use of generative AI.
Attitudes towards AI are clearly changing, with more workers showing interest in learning this technology: 40% of men say they have already started experimenting with it, while 34% of women report the same. According to research, more than half of the population (55% women and 54% men) will see their jobs enhanced or disrupted by AI.
