Recently, the AI Olympiad Prize supported by Terence Tao has been introduced, offering up to $5 million in awards, aiming to discover large AI models capable of winning gold medals in IMO competitions. This initiative, named AI-MO, was initiated by XTX Markets with the goal of advancing the mathematical reasoning capabilities of large language models and encouraging the development of new AI models that can match the highest levels of human mathematics.

The AI-MO competition requires participating AI models to possess the same problem-solving format as humans and the ability to generate readable answers. Preliminary rules stipulate that AI models must be evaluated under IMO standards, with final results to be announced alongside the 65th IMO conference in Bath, UK, next July. AI models achieving gold medal standards will receive the grand prize of $5 million, while others that "achieve key milestones" will share the remaining progress awards, totaling another $5 million.

Notably, to qualify for awards, participants must adhere to the AI-MO Public Sharing Agreement, meaning winning models must be open-sourced. Although competition rules are still under discussion, the organizing committee is recruiting advisory board members and a competition director. This competition has already garnered widespread attention, becoming one of the hot topics in the tech community.

Although AI-MO is not an official competition initiated by the IMO but rather by XTX Markets, it has caused quite a stir in the industry. While the previous IMO Grand Challenge saw no successful participants, the current AI-MO competition offers a larger prize pool, attracting even more attention. Industry insiders are particularly interested in which AI might be the first to claim victory. Driven by financial incentives, the question of whether an AI capable of solving difficult mathematical problems will emerge and surpass humans to win an IMO gold medal has become a focal point in the industry.
