OpenAI Executives Claim AI Will Be Capable of Any Job Within 10 Years
-
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and CTO Mira Murati announced at the Wall Street Journal's WSJ Tech Live conference that artificial intelligence (AI) is projected to be capable of handling any task a human can perform within the next 10 years. This milestone, known as 'Artificial General Intelligence' (AGI), is set to redefine the nature of work.
Sam Altman remarked, 'We strongly believe that when people are given better tools, they will create things that amaze you. I think AGI will be the greatest tool humanity has ever created.' His statement underscores the immense potential of AI in the future.
At the same time, both executives emphasized the need for caution in AI development. Developers must address potential risks, share safety technologies, and ensure that regulatory and societal infrastructures keep pace with technological advancements. Mira Murati highlighted one specific safety measure: gradually rolling out the technology and slowly integrating it into real-world applications to understand its impact on specific use cases and industries, while proactively addressing any consequences.
When discussing publishers' objections to their content being used to train AI models, Sam Altman noted that as AI models become more intelligent and capable of reasoning, discussions about data will soon shift, as they will no longer require data for training. Additionally, Mira Murati mentioned that OpenAI is testing a technology that is nearly 99% reliable for detecting AI-generated images, though detecting AI-generated text is more complex, and the company is conducting further research in this area.
Regarding how AI will change the nature of work, Mira Murati suggested that it could exacerbate inequality while also boosting productivity and creativity, but it will undoubtedly trigger significant shifts in the labor market. Sam Altman added, 'Every technological revolution affects the job market. I’m not worried at all—in fact, I believe this is how progress happens. We will find new and better jobs.'
Recent reports indicate that OpenAI is considering a share sale that would value the company at $86 billion, triple its valuation from six months ago. This news comes amid a surge in investment in the AI sector, partly driven by the popularity of generative AI models like OpenAI's ChatGPT.
