Google's Generative AI-Powered SGE Search Experience Raises Concerns Among Publishers

Google's recently launched generative AI-powered search tool has raised concerns among publishers, creating doubts about how they will adapt to a world where information access and monetization are dominated by AI. This new product, called 'Search Generative Experience (SGE),' has already been rolled out in the U.S., India, and Japan.

SGE uses AI technology to generate summaries in response to certain search queries, based on Google's system determining whether the format is needed. These summaries appear at the top of Google's search homepage and include 'Learn More' links.

Publishers' concerns include web traffic, whether they will be credited as sources in SGE summaries, and the accuracy of the summaries. Particularly important is the issue of publishers seeking compensation for their content used to train Google's and other AI companies' tools—a major sticking point in the AI debate.

A Google spokesperson stated in a declaration: 'As we introduce generative AI into search, we will continue to prioritize sending valuable traffic to a wide range of creators, including news publishers, in multiple ways to support a healthy open web.'

Regarding compensation, Google mentioned it is working to better understand the business models of generative AI applications and is gathering feedback from publishers and other stakeholders.
