Recently, OpenAI announced its annual revenue has reached $1.3 billion, averaging over $100 million per month, with a year-over-year growth exceeding 4,500%. This remarkable growth is primarily driven by the launch of the paid version of ChatGPT, which has seen substantial subscription growth for its conversational chatbot. Last year, OpenAI's annual revenue was $28 million, making this year's $1.3 billion performance particularly noteworthy and signaling OpenAI's emergence as a leader in the AI field.

OpenAI's rapid growth has also boosted its valuation, with external investors potentially valuing the company at $80 billion or higher—nearly tripling in a short period. OpenAI is positioning itself as a frontrunner in large language models (LLMs). While the technology still has room for improvement, it is already being used for tasks such as writing and running code, accessing the internet, and retrieving and referencing documents.

On the other hand, Google DeepMind saw a 21% decline in revenue and a nearly 40% drop in profits in 2022. Although DeepMind achieved significant milestones before the advent of GPT-3 and boasts a lineup of star AI models, its profitability in recent years has largely relied on funding from Alphabet, Google's parent company. In contrast, OpenAI's commercialization of ChatGPT and large models has fueled rapid growth, positioning it to soon surpass DeepMind in performance.

OpenAI plans to hold its first developer conference, focusing on cost optimization to provide more economical and efficient services. The company also aims to raise up to $100 billion to support its ambitious goals.

Despite its strong performance in the AI industry, OpenAI faces high operational costs, recording a $540 million loss last year, partly due to expenses for AI computing resources. Meanwhile, Microsoft has pledged financial support to fund OpenAI's operations and AI development.

OpenAI's growth may help mitigate competition from rivals like Google, which are also rolling out large language models. Generative AI has become a bellwether for the AI industry, with OpenAI emerging as a standout while DeepMind grapples with declining performance and business model adjustments.

    Conclusion

OpenAI's rapid growth signals bright commercial prospects in the AI field, though high costs remain an issue. Meanwhile, DeepMind's declining performance contrasts sharply with OpenAI's rise, underscoring the importance of generative AI. This trend indicates that AI companies must continuously innovate and improve to meet market demands and achieve sustainable growth.
