Fast Technology reported on September 26 that OpenAI has introduced voice conversation functionality to its chatbot ChatGPT, which is expected to challenge tech giants like Google and Apple in the smart voice assistant market.

It is reported that ChatGPT can respond to user queries using five distinct 'characters,' and its tone sounds more human-like compared to voice assistants like Alexa and Siri. OpenAI stated that adding voice functionality is a crucial way to attract more users to interact with ChatGPT.

Now, users can prompt the chatbot not only by typing in a text box but also by speaking aloud.

Voice assistants are already prevalent in cars, smartphones, TVs, and smart speakers, used by countless people daily. However, in most cases, voice assistants can only handle simple interactions, such as turning on lights or reporting the weather. The 'large language model' technology behind chatbots opens up the possibility for voice assistants to engage in longer, more natural conversations and answer more complex questions.

Additionally, OpenAI has also equipped ChatGPT with 'eyes.' Paid and enterprise users will be able to use image functionality, which is somewhat similar to Google Lens. Users can take a photo of something they're interested in, and ChatGPT will identify the issue and respond accordingly.

OpenAI staff mentioned that they have tested the voice and image features and implemented safety measures to ensure the bot responds appropriately to sensitive topics.
