Musk Announces Open-Sourcing of xAI Grok-2.5, Names Chinese Companies as Strongest Competitors
-
Tesla CEO Elon Musk officially announced on social media that xAI's best model, Grok-2.5 (actually Grok-2), will be open-sourced. At the same time, he revealed that Grok-3 will also be open-sourced in about six months. Musk emphasized in the announcement that China's leading position in power and hardware infrastructure makes it the world's largest competitor.
Musk stated that xAI will quickly surpass all companies except Google and is expected to eventually overtake Google as well. He pointed out that China's power supply far exceeds that of the U.S. and that it has demonstrated strong capabilities in hardware development. He mentioned that China's electricity generation is growing rapidly, with a speed that can be described as 'rocket-like,' while the U.S. appears stagnant in this regard.
According to official data, in July of this year, China's total electricity consumption historically exceeded one trillion kilowatt-hours, a global first. To put this number into perspective, Musk noted that if this trillion kilowatt-hours were distributed, it would average 730 kilowatt-hours per person per month, equivalent to the total electricity consumption of the U.S. in a quarter.
Musk's remarks have drawn widespread attention, as he expressed high recognition for China's achievements in technology and power. With the open-sourcing of xAI, many developers and researchers will have the opportunity to utilize this advanced AI model, which may further drive technological progress and applications.
In future competition, the rapid rise of Chinese companies has filled Musk with anticipation. He believes that with increasing global power demand and advancements in hardware technology, China will play a significant role in future technological competition.
