Generative artificial intelligence should transform how we work across many fields, but web statistics indicate this sector is currently driven and dominated by ChatGPT.

A16z analyzed traffic across various GenAI-related websites using Sameweb. Among the top 50 "GenAI" web applications, ChatGPT is by far the most popular, accounting for 60% of total traffic.

Ranking second and third are entertainment-focused Character AI and Google's Bard chatbot respectively, but their traffic is significantly lower with much smaller market impact.

Despite ChatGPT's dominance in generative AI, it remains a niche phenomenon compared to popular web platforms like WhatsApp or YouTube, with traffic roughly equivalent to Yahoo or Canva.

These statistics tell us that despite the rapid start in the field of generative AI, ChatGPT and generative AI remain relatively niche phenomena. These tools have proven very useful for many people, but they are still seeking a firm foothold in many domains. Moreover, their cost-effectiveness is increasingly being questioned, and their very existence faces legal challenges.

The current hype and predictions about generative AI's massive impact on our lives and work may be exaggerated. The truth will become clearer when next-generation models (Gemini, GPT-5, Claude3, etc.) enter the market. If they can improve by five to ten percentage points over current systems, large language models and other generative AI systems will remain useful tools that can expand, accelerate, or simplify certain text or image tasks while aiding creative thinking.
