Google recently announced that it will provide its latest Gemini AI tools to US federal agencies at nearly zero cost. The news was revealed in a joint statement by the US General Services Administration (GSA), aiming to accelerate the government's adoption of AI technology. Google CEO Sundar Pichai stated, "Gemini for Government provides federal agencies with comprehensive AI innovation solutions to help them fulfill critical missions."

The Gemini tools offer diverse capabilities, including generating videos, images, and creative content, as well as providing digital "assistants" capable of independently handling complex tasks. According to the GSA, federal agencies will pay less than a dollar for this service. This cooperation agreement builds on Google's previous initiative to provide Google Workspace software to the government at a significant discount.

GSA Acting Administrator Michael Rigas noted, "Federal agencies can now significantly transform their operations by leveraging the tools in Gemini for Government." The timing of this collaboration coincides with Google's competitor OpenAI recently announcing a one-year agreement with the US government, allowing agencies to use the enterprise version of ChatGPT for just $1.

OpenAI stated in its blog, "By providing government employees with powerful and secure AI tools, we can help them solve problems faster and serve more people." Earlier this year, the US Department of Defense also awarded OpenAI a $200 million contract to apply generative AI technology to military operations, improving administrative tasks such as healthcare for service members and enhancing cyber defense.

Google's move is undoubtedly part of its strategy to compete in the AI field while demonstrating the government's commitment to advancing digital transformation. As AI technology continues to evolve, these advanced tools will increasingly appear in government operations and services.
