On July 26, foreign media reported that OpenAI has quietly shut down its artificial intelligence (AI) detection tool, AI Classifier, due to low accuracy.

It is reported that AI Classifier was launched in January this year and was primarily used to distinguish whether text was written by humans or generated by AI. Initially, the tool was hailed as a potential solution for identifying AI-generated text but failed to meet expectations.

OpenAI revealed that AI Classifier had an accuracy rate of only 26% in identifying AI-generated content and incorrectly labeled 9% of human-written text as AI-generated. As a result, the company described the tool as "not fully reliable."

After acknowledging the tool's very low accuracy, the company has discontinued its use. OpenAI has promised to introduce other detection tools that users can trust.

In an updated blog post, OpenAI stated that it is working to incorporate feedback and explore more effective techniques to verify the origin of text.
