World's Leading AI Companies Commit to Responsible AI Development
-
The White House announced that seven leading AI companies—Amazon, Anthropic, Google, Inflection, Meta, Microsoft, and OpenAI—have made voluntary commitments to ensure the safe, reliable, and transparent development of AI technology.
The voluntary commitments emphasize three fundamental principles for the future of AI: safety, security, and trust, marking a critical step toward responsible AI development.
The White House stated that the U.S. government aims to seize the vast opportunities presented by AI while managing its risks to protect the rights and safety of the American people.
Under the agreement, these companies will develop watermarking systems to embed in their platforms, allowing users to identify whether content (text, images, audio, and video) was generated by AI and by which system. This measure could help detect deepfake images or audio, though it remains unclear how watermarks will appear during information sharing.
The companies also pledged to conduct multiple safety tests before releasing AI systems and to involve external experts in reviews. Additionally, they committed to protecting user privacy, ensuring the technology is free from bias and not used to discriminate against vulnerable groups. Other commitments include developing AI solutions for scientific challenges like medical research and climate change mitigation.
The White House clarified that these commitments do not replace federal action or legislation, as the administration is actively drafting an executive order to regulate AI use.
Since the rise of generative AI, lawmakers worldwide have begun considering how to mitigate the risks this emerging technology poses to national security and the economy. In May, the Biden administration sought public input to develop a national AI strategy addressing misinformation and other potential drawbacks. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer called for comprehensive legislation in June to advance and ensure AI regulation.
