Instagram Launches Generative AI-Powered Background Editing Tool for Effortless Unique Image Creation
-
Instagram has launched a new generative AI-powered background editing tool, officially rolled out to U.S. users on December 14. Ahmad Al-Dahle, Meta's head of generative AI, shared on Threads that this tool enables users to alter image backgrounds by inputting prompts for stories.
When using the tool, users simply click the background edit icon on an image to access a selection of prepared prompts, such as "walking on a red carpet," "being chased by dinosaurs," or "surrounded by puppies." Additionally, users can write their own prompts to customize the background editing.
Once a user posts a Story with a newly generated background, others will see a "Try it" sticker with the prompt, inviting them to engage with the image generation tool. This interactive experience makes it easy for users to share and participate in creating unique visual stories.
The introduction of this AI background editing tool not only provides more possibilities for image creation but also enhances interactivity among users. Meanwhile, Snapchat also released a new tool this week that allows paid users to create and send AI-generated images.
In August this year, Snapchat launched a new feature called "Dreams," enabling users to create fantasy images with different themes. Additionally, Meta rolled out 28 AI-based characters for U.S. users across all its apps (WhatsApp, Messenger, and Instagram) earlier this month, supporting Bing search and better contextual windows. The company also introduced a standalone AI image generator called "Imagine with Meta," powered by its in-house model "Emu."
This series of innovations demonstrates that generative AI technology is becoming a key driver of creative expression and user interaction in the social media space. Instagram's new background editing tool offers users more creative options, making image sharing more fun and imaginative.
