ChatGPT Named One of Nature's 10 People of the Year, OpenAI Chief Scientist Also Honored

In 2023, Nature magazine unveiled its annual list of 'Nature's 10,' featuring ten outstanding individuals—half men and half women—selected from significant global scientific events. However, this year's list includes a special member: the chatbot ChatGPT, developed by the U.S. artificial intelligence company OpenAI.
Notably, Ilya Sutskever, OpenAI's Chief Scientist and a leading figure in the field of artificial intelligence, received this honor instead of the company's CEO, Sam Altman.
Richard Monastersky, Features Editor at Nature, stated that ChatGPT has sparked widespread media attention this year, with its impact deeply felt across the scientific community and society at large. Although it is not a person and does not fully meet the criteria for Nature's 10, the magazine specially included it in the list to recognize the significant contributions of generative AI to scientific development and progress.
The selected individuals are: Kalpana Kalahasti, Deputy Project Director of India's Chandrayaan-3 mission at ISRO; Annie Kritcher, Chief Engineer of the U.S. National Ignition Facility; Katsuhiko Hayashi, Developmental Biologist at Osaka University; Ilya Sutskever, Chief Scientist at OpenAI and AI pioneer; Marina Silva, Brazil's Minister of Environment; Eleni Myrivili, the UN's first Global Chief Heat Officer; Halidou Tinto, Parasitology expert; Thomas Powles, Cancer researcher at London's St Bartholomew's Hospital; Svetlana Mojsov, Biochemist; James Hamlin, Physicist at the University of Florida.
