AI Empowers E-commerce Growth Engine: Taobao Wenwen Surpasses 10 Million Trial Users

The first AI-powered Double 11 shopping festival has just concluded. During Tmall's Double 11, AI saw large-scale applications across merchant operations, consumer experiences, content creation, and more. CCTV Finance's special program "2023 China E-commerce Annual Development Report" noted that AI large models have been implemented in Taobao's search functionality, accumulating over 10 million trial users.
"For consumers, we launched the AI product Taobao Wenwen, allowing them to participate in Double 11 in a more fun, enjoyable, and cost-effective way," said Dai Shan, CEO of Taotian Group, during the program.
Taobao Wenwen is an AI assistant developed by Taobao for its users, marking the e-commerce industry's first generative AI product. It enables stronger interaction formats, more efficient shopping experiences, and broader application scenarios. According to CCTV reports, since its beta testing began in early September, Taobao Wenwen has already been trialed by over ten million users.
Bai Hong, head of search business at Taotian Group, explained: "Compared with traditional shopping search, it (Taobao Wenwen) can unleash the most natural and effortless shopping demands. This represents a completely new experience that replaces the conventional 'search' behavior medium, allowing consumers to better express their needs."
For example, consumers can ask precise questions in natural language, such as "down jackets worth buying during Double 11," and Taobao's AI assistant will provide the most cost-effective styles and related recommendations. The trained large AI model can deeply understand these queries and accurately answer users' personalized questions in a conversational format, offering generative content and one-stop solutions that reduce the time and effort users spend on selection and decision-making.
A new round of technological revolution is bound to unleash new technological dividends. According to CCTV's 2023 China E-commerce Annual Development Report, AI-powered e-commerce will create a new engine for consumption growth. In this process, Taobao Tmall, as the largest consumption platform, will serve as the biggest testing and nurturing ground for AI applications.
