ChatGPT Engineer Salaries Revealed: Median Annual Pay Around 6.74 Million RMB
-
November 9 news - With the explosive popularity of ChatGPT, OpenAI has become a focal point of public attention.
According to data from a U.S. salary tracking website, the median annual salary for OpenAI software engineers is as high as $925,000 (approximately 6.74 million RMB), which includes a $300,000 base salary and $625,000 in Profit Participation Units (PPU).
PPU is a unique incentive mechanism created by OpenAI, allowing employees to share in the company's future profits. Since OpenAI cannot sell shares, this method is used to compete with large tech companies for talent.
Specifically, there are two options to convert PPU into cash: first, hold the PPU until the company achieves substantial profits; second, sell it directly to others.
As for specific salary figures, the lowest-paid entry-level L3 engineers (with about 2 to 4 years of industry experience) still earn a base salary of $210,000 (approximately 1.53 million RMB).
Meanwhile, L5 software engineers (with over 10 years of experience) receive a base salary of $300,000 (approximately 2.18 million RMB), along with additional stock compensation and other benefits.
As for some more senior-level software engineers, the annual salary can reach up to $1.4 million (approximately 10.2 million RMB).
OpenAI's high salaries not only affect individuals but also have a significant impact on the entire industry. According to data from the website, in San Francisco, known for its tech talent pool, the average annual salary for AI software developers is around $300,000.
OpenAI, with salaries three times higher, has set a new benchmark for compensation in the region and demonstrates its determination to attract and retain top-tier AI talent.
